EXTREME Off The Grid Living

Off The Grid?

Come and find out what it

You discover how one family left everything to live off the grid
without electricity, without running water, and without any means of
communication in the backwoods of Eastern Idaho.

Esther Emery and Nick Fouch lived a typical suburban
lifestyle. They lived outside of Boston with their three children, he
commuted to the city for work every day while she stayed home with the kids.
However, this "typical" modern day lifestyle wore out its welcome and
they soon realized they weren't truly happy. Nick began to feel like a father
that really just wasn't there for his family. The long work hours stole him
from his family and it hurt. Drastic times calls for drastic measures and
that's exactly what was about to happen!

Together they made the decision to take their entire life
savings and moved the family to the backwoods of eastern Idaho.

They now live in a 314 square-foot
yurt. Nick built the furniture and the beds himself. Inside their home they
haven't the luxuries of running water, electricity, or means of communication.
Their bathroom... it's a six-foot hole in the ground. When we talk about
off the grid... we really mean off the grid!

They grow
food in their own garden which they tend, eggs are supplied by the chickens
they keep, and would you believe a bicycle powered washing machine?

How many drawers do you have for
clothes? Because the Fouch's have one each! 

What would
you expect a youth to say they miss the most, living off grid in these
conditions? Milo Fouch, the eldest of the three Fouch kids, says he misses
watching TV the most. However, he'd proudly give up watching the TV to watch
his Dad! I've been there myself and my family knows exactly what that's like. I
spent 22 years in the military either deployed or away on training. My daughter
is 10 now and this blog your reading has a major role in keeping me home now.
Part of the lifestyle of us building our own off the grid cabin is to spend
more family time together.

Esther
says...

I never imagined we could find
so much happiness without access to the resources and possessions we used
to have.

It wasn't
until the family got to Idaho that she realized she could not only survive, but
truly thrive, in her new off grid lifestyle. Not unlike how we're funding our
entire cabin from writing this blog!

As satisfying
as their life might be, it's not without struggles. When the family experienced
their first winter in the backwoods they started to feel a bit trapped. Esther
even had a terrifying run-in with a grizzly bear while Nick was out of town.

Imagine… Tesla, one of the most technologically advanced electric car companies of the year, building energy efficient batteries to power your home or off the grid cabin!

“We are trying to figure out what would be a cool stationary (battery) pack,” Forbes had quoted Musk as saying at the time. “Some will be like the Model S pack: something flat, 5 inches off the wall, wall mounted, with a beautiful cover, an integrated bi-directional inverter, and plug and play.”

Today’s post is more about a new technology being birthed that involves living off the grid than the actual cabin build itself. But, I feel it’s important to keep people in the know about up and coming technologies and the companies that are working to support those of us with the desire to live off grid.



Most people who power their off the grid home use deep cycle marine grade batteries, recharged via solar panels. The technology around these batteries really hasn’t changed all that much over the past few years. Every now and again we make a leap forward in power storage technology and maybe, just maybe, Tesla will give us our next.



Depending on the number of batteries someone who lives off the grid uses, the battery quality, age, size and a plethora of other factors dictate how efficient and how long the power will past following a charge with your solar panels or gas generator. Imagine one of the most technologically advanced electric vehicle manufacturers working on designing a rechargeable battery system capable of powering our homes.

Today Lets Take A Walk Through The Woods

Not every build site is as easily accessible as ours.



However, not every build site is a difficult either.

Before The Road

Many years ago, our property was forested for its trees by Irving. The trees were no doubt used in the pulp/paper and lumber sectors.

Irving is a massive products and services company that operate in fields ranging from ship building, to food agriculture, to forestry to oil refining and retail/distribution here in Nova Scotia.



Our land has been completely replanted and the new growth is amazingly healthy and thick.



During the replanting, there was an 8 ft wide trail created that we utilize to get access our the build site.

However, this will not be the permanent route we’ll use and I have since blazed a trail through the dense bush in order for the road builder to put in a new gravel road.



Today we’re simply taking you on a FFD speed walk through the trail to show you what we’ve been dealing with the past few months while scoping out a build site.



The walk is only a few minutes but let me say, at the end of a day of cutting wood and clearing brush… a 5 minutes walk UP HILL takes every last bit of effort.
