"It was just a couple of sentences during Wednesday's 2014 earnings call by Tesla Motors executives. But in it, CEO Elon Musk apparently revealed a new line of business for the company: selling or leasing lithium-ion battery packs for home energy storage. Musk said:"We’re going to unveil the Tesla home battery [indiscernible] consumer battery that will be for use in and [sic] people’s houses or businesses, fairly soon. We have the design done and it should start going into production probably about six months or so. We probably got a date to have sort of product unveiling, it’s probably in the next month or two. It’s really great. I’m really excited about it." It remains unclear whether the "we" in Musk's statement refers to Tesla Motors, or to Solar City, but the Tesla brand might give added cachet to lithium-ion batteries offered to homeowners who already have solar panels installed."

You Think The Tesla Car Is Pretty Energy Savvy?

Imagine… Tesla, one of the most technologically advanced electric car companies of the year, building energy efficient batteries to power your home or off the grid cabin!

“We are trying to figure out what would be a cool stationary (battery) pack,” Forbes had quoted Musk as saying at the time. “Some will be like the Model S pack: something flat, 5 inches off the wall, wall mounted, with a beautiful cover, an integrated bi-directional inverter, and plug and play.”

Today’s post is more about a new technology being birthed that involves living off the grid than the actual cabin build itself. But, I feel it’s important to keep people in the know about up and coming technologies and the companies that are working to support those of us with the desire to live off grid.



Most people who power their off the grid home use deep cycle marine grade batteries, recharged via solar panels. The technology around these batteries really hasn’t changed all that much over the past few years. Every now and again we make a leap forward in power storage technology and maybe, just maybe, Tesla will give us our next.



Depending on the number of batteries someone who lives off the grid uses, the battery quality, age, size and a plethora of other factors dictate how efficient and how long the power will past following a charge with your solar panels or gas generator. Imagine one of the most technologically advanced electric vehicle manufacturers working on designing a rechargeable battery system capable of powering our homes.

Today Lets Take A Walk Through The Woods

Not every build site is as easily accessible as ours.



However, not every build site is a difficult either.



Here’s a quick video showing you how we access our



Before The Road

Many years ago, our property was forested for its trees by Irving. The trees were no doubt used in the pulp/paper and lumber sectors.

Irving is a massive products and services company that operate in fields ranging from ship building, to food agriculture, to forestry to oil refining and retail/distribution here in Nova Scotia.



Our land has been completely replanted and the new growth is amazingly healthy and thick.



During the replanting, there was an 8 ft wide trail created that we utilize to get access our the build site.

However, this will not be the permanent route we’ll use and I have since blazed a trail through the dense bush in order for the road builder to put in a new gravel road.



Today we’re simply taking you on a FFD speed walk through the trail to show you what we’ve been dealing with the past few months while scoping out a build site.



The walk is only a few minutes but let me say, at the end of a day of cutting wood and clearing brush… a 5 minutes walk UP HILL takes every last bit of effort.

Whew... We're nearly finished blazing the trail!



Have you ever blazed a trail from a thick forest out in the middle of nowhere all day, every day, for a week?



What an incredible feat. I have to give my wife huge props for all the hard work she put in helping me down the trees, cut wood, chop, hatchet, and maul trees into submission. I think her favorite part was learning to use a chain saw for the first time. I know it was mine! Want to see her put it to work you can check out the video right here...



Folks, I am thrilled to let you know that the trail is finally complete. I have been at this for some time now and what an experience it's been. There is something incredible about carving out your own little piece of the world and honestly its one of the great achievements of my life... so far. Heck, we haven't even started building the off grid cabin yet.



The BEST parts for me have been... learning to use a chain saw properly, discovering so much more to our property that I ever expected, I lost 16lbs and I feel like a million bucks.



The trail we've been blazing is roughly 650 ft long and it runs from the top of Hidden lane (the top of section #3) all the way down to the bottom of section #1 where we're building our off the grid cabin.



Come and see what all the hubbub is about!

It The Hottest Spot On The Property!

In today's video I'm giving you a first hand look at the lake, the property and the layout for our off the grid cabin.





What Did We Get Into



A few months back we decided that we needed to unplug from the hustle and bustle of daily life here in the city. We've been on a grand total of ONE family vacation in the past 10 years since or daughter was born and honestly... they deserve better. I've been deployed for the majority of those 10 years but really... that's NOT an excuse.



My wife and I both have government jobs, although I'm home fighting thyroid cancer right now, our daughter is 10 years old going on 11 (wow) and we both have our own home businesses. Along with trying to maintain and pay for a brand new 3600 square foot home, we've created quite a busy lifestyle that would otherwise drive most people crazy.



We reached the point where we simply HAD to unplug. Here's how we're doing it.





The Property
